Artificial Intelligence: 2

RETURN TO LESSON OUTLINE

Getting Started – Creating Your Account

Welcome Back!

Great to see you again! In Lesson 1, we learned what AI is and how it can help you. Today, we’re going to take the exciting step of actually setting up your account and getting you ready to use AI.

By the end of today’s lesson, you’ll have your very own AI account and you’ll be ready to start having conversations. Let’s get started!

What You’ll Need Today

Before we begin, make sure you have:

A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access ✓ An email address (like yourname@gmail.com, yourname@yahoo.com, etc.) ✓ Your email password so you can check your email during setup ✓ About 30 minutes of time to go through the setup process ✓ A pen and paper to write down your new password

Don’t have an email address? No problem! We can help you set one up first. Most people use Gmail (from Google) because it’s free and easy. Just ask your instructor for help before we begin the AI setup.

Choosing Your AI Assistant

Remember from Lesson 1, we discussed two main AI chatbots: Claude and ChatGPT. Today, we’ll set up accounts for both, but don’t worry—the process is very similar for each one.

Good news: You can use both! Some people prefer one over the other, and some use both for different purposes. There’s no wrong choice.

For today’s lesson, we’ll start with Claude.ai, then show you ChatGPT.

Part 1: Setting Up Your Claude.ai Account

Step 1: Open Your Web Browser

First, open your internet browser. This is the program you use to visit websites. It might be called:

  • Chrome (has a colorful circle icon)
  • Safari (has a blue compass icon—common on Apple devices)
  • Edge (has a blue “e” or wave icon—common on Windows)
  • Firefox (has an orange fox icon)
  • Opera (has a red “O”)

Any of these will work perfectly!

Step 2: Go to the Claude Website

In the address bar at the top (where website addresses go), type exactly:

claude.ai

You can do a Google Search for Claude.ai but the direct approach is better.

Then press Enter or Return on your keyboard.

Helpful tip: The address bar is the long white rectangle at the very top of your browser where you see web addresses. If you’re not sure which one it is, look for where it says something like “google.com” or shows a web address.

Step 3: Click “Sign Up” or “Get Started”

When the Claude.ai page loads, you’ll see a button that says either “Sign Up,” “Get Started,” or “Try Claude.” Click on it.

What you’ll see: A clean, simple page, usually white or light-colored, with the Claude logo and a big button inviting you to start.

Step 4: Enter Your Email Address

You’ll see a box asking for your email address.

Type carefully: yourname@gmail.com (or whatever your email is)

Double-check your typing! It’s easy to make a small mistake that will cause problems later. Make sure:

  • You spelled everything correctly
  • You included the @ symbol
  • You have the right ending (.com, .net, .org, etc.)

Then click “Continue” or “Next”

Step 5: Create Your Password

Now you need to create a password. This is like a secret code that keeps your account safe.

Password Requirements: Most sites require:

  • At least 8 characters (letters and numbers)
  • At least one capital letter
  • At least one number
  • Sometimes a special character (like ! or #)

Creating a Good Password:

GOOD password examples:

  • Sunset2024!
  • GardenLove99
  • Coffee&Books3
  • B3atitud3$
  • Y0ur-La$t-Na^^3

AVOID these:

  • password123 (too common)
  • 12345678 (too simple)
  • Your birthday or address (too easy to guess)

IMPORTANT: Write this password down right now on paper!

Write it exactly as you typed it, including capital letters and special characters. Keep this paper in a safe place. You’ll need this password every time you log in.

Type your password twice: You’ll usually need to enter it in two boxes—once in “Password” and again in “Confirm Password.” This makes sure you didn’t make a typing mistake.

Step 6: Check Your Email

After you click “Create Account” or “Sign Up,” Claude will send you an email to verify that you really own that email address.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Open your email (in a different tab or window—don’t close Claude!)
  2. Look for an email from Claude or Anthropic (Anthropic is the company that makes Claude)
  3. It might take a minute or two to arrive—be patient!
  4. Check your Spam or Junk folder if you don’t see it after a few minutes

The email will say something like: “Welcome to Claude! Please verify your email address.”

  1. Click the button or link in the email that says “Verify Email” or “Confirm Your Account”

Step 7: Welcome to Claude!

After you verify your email, you’ll be taken back to Claude, and you should see:

  • A welcome message
  • A chat box where you can type messages
  • A clean, simple interface

Congratulations! You’ve just created your Claude account!

Part 2: Understanding the Claude Interface

Now that you’re in, let’s look around and understand what you’re seeing.

The Main Chat Area

This is the big area in the middle of your screen—it’s where your conversations with Claude will appear. Right now, it’s probably mostly empty with a message like “How can I help you today?”

The Message Box

At the bottom, you’ll see a box (usually with a white background) where you can type. This is where you’ll type your questions and messages to Claude.

You might see text inside that says: “Message Claude…” or “Type a message…”

This is just a hint—you can click in the box and start typing.

The Send Button

Next to or inside the message box, you’ll see a button (often an arrow, paper airplane icon, or a button that says “Send”). After you type your message, you’ll click this to send it to Claude.

The Sidebar (Left Side)

On the left side of your screen, you might see:

  • “New Chat” button—click this to start fresh conversations
  • Previous conversations—a list of chats you’ve had (empty for now)
  • Your account settings—usually a small icon or your initials

Top Right Corner

Here you’ll usually find:

  • Your account name or icon
  • Settings menu (often looks like a gear ⚙️)
  • Help or support options

Don’t worry about memorizing all this! You’ll naturally learn where everything is as you use it. For now, all you really need is the message box in the middle.

Part 3: Setting Up Your ChatGPT Account

Now let’s set up ChatGPT so you have both options available!

Step 1: Go to ChatGPT

In your web browser’s address bar, type:

chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com

(Either one will work!)

Press Enter.

Step 2: Sign Up

Click the “Sign Up” button (it’s usually prominently displayed).

Step 3: Choose How to Sign Up

ChatGPT gives you a few options:

Option 1: Continue with Google

  • If you have a Gmail account, this is the easiest way
  • Click “Continue with Google”
  • Choose your email address
  • Click “Allow” when it asks for permission
  • Done! You’re in!

Option 2: Continue with Apple

  • If you have an iPhone or iPad with an Apple ID
  • Click “Continue with Apple”
  • Follow the prompts

Option 3: Use Your Email Address

  • Click “Continue with email”
  • Enter your email address
  • Create a password (same rules as before)
  • Verify your email (just like with Claude)

Helpful Tip: If you used Google to sign up, you won’t need to remember a separate password—you’ll just click “Continue with Google” each time you want to log in.

Step 4: Tell ChatGPT Your Name

ChatGPT will ask for your name. You can use:

  • Your first name only (Mary, John, etc.)
  • A nickname
  • First and last name

This is just so it can address you personally in conversations.

Step 5: You’re In!

You should now see the ChatGPT interface, which looks similar to Claude:

  • A main chat area
  • A message box at the bottom
  • Previous conversations on the left side

Congratulations! You now have both AI assistants set up!

Part 4: Important Privacy and Security Information

Now that you have accounts, let’s talk about keeping them safe and protecting your privacy.

What’s Safe to Share with AI

✓ SAFE to share:

  • General questions about any topic
  • Recipe requests
  • Travel planning questions
  • Technology help questions
  • Learning and educational questions
  • Writing help for letters or emails (general content)
  • Hobby and craft questions
  • General health questions (what does this medical term mean?)

✗ NEVER share:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Bank account numbers or credit card numbers
  • Passwords (including your AI account password!)
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Full medical records with personal identification
  • Other people’s private information
  • Home security codes or alarm information
  • Passport numbers

⚠️ BE CAREFUL sharing:

  • Your full address (city and state are fine, but not your street address)
  • Phone numbers
  • Names of family members combined with other details
  • Financial information
  • Information about when you’ll be away from home

Understanding Privacy

Here’s what happens to your conversations:

  • Your conversations are stored so the AI can remember what you’ve discussed in that chat
  • They’re used to help improve the AI (but they’re not linked to your personal identity in a public way)
  • Employees at the company might review some conversations for quality and safety purposes
  • Your conversations are private—other users can’t see them

Think of it like this: It’s similar to talking to a librarian. The librarian helps you and might remember what you talked about, but they’re not going to tell everyone else your business. However, you still wouldn’t give your Social Security number to a librarian, right? Same principle here.

Password Safety

DO:

  • ✓ Write your password down and keep the paper in a safe place at home
  • ✓ Use different passwords for different websites
  • ✓ Make your password at least 8 characters with a mix of letters and numbers
  • ✓ Include at least one capital letter

DON’T:

  • ✗ Use the same password for everything
  • ✗ Share your password with others (unless it’s a trusted family member helping you)
  • ✗ Write your password on a sticky note on your computer
  • ✗ Use obvious passwords like “password” or “123456”

Logging Out

When you’re done using AI, especially on a shared or public computer, it’s smart to log out:

To log out:

  1. Look for your name or account icon (usually top right corner)
  2. Click on it
  3. Click “Log Out” or “Sign Out”

On your personal home computer or tablet? You can stay logged in for convenience—it’s generally safe.

Part 5: Free vs. Paid Versions

Both Claude and ChatGPT offer free and paid versions. Let’s understand the difference:

Free Versions (What You Have Now)

What you GET with free:

  • Unlimited basic conversations
  • Answers to questions
  • Help with writing
  • Learning and information
  • Most features you’ll want

What you DON’T get with free:

  • The absolute latest and most advanced AI model
  • Priority access during busy times
  • Some advanced features

The truth: The free versions are excellent! Most people, especially when starting out, find the free version does everything they need.

Paid Versions

Claude Pro: About $20/month ChatGPT Plus: About $20/month

What you get:

  • Access to more advanced AI versions
  • Faster responses during peak times
  • More messages per day (though free has plenty for most users)
  • Early access to new features

Should you upgrade?

Not right now! Start with the free version. After you’ve used it for a few weeks or months, you’ll know if you need more. Most people never need to upgrade.

Think of it like: Getting cable TV. Basic channels (free) work great for most people. Premium channels (paid) are nice but not necessary unless you really want them.

Part 6: Logging In for Next Time

Now that your account is created, here’s how to log in next time:

For Claude:

  1. Go to claude.ai in your web browser
  2. Click “Log In”
  3. Enter your email address
  4. Enter your password
  5. Click “Continue” or “Log In”
  6. You’re in!

For ChatGPT:

  1. Go to chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com
  2. Click “Log In”
  3. Either:
    • Click “Continue with Google” (if you signed up that way), OR
    • Enter your email and password
  4. You’re in!

Forgot your password? Every login page has a “Forgot Password?” link. Click it, enter your email, and they’ll send you instructions to reset it.

Part 7: Quick Troubleshooting

Here are solutions to common problems:

“I didn’t receive the verification email”

Try this:

  1. Wait 5 minutes—sometimes emails are slow
  2. Check your Spam or Junk folder
  3. Check that you typed your email correctly
  4. Click “Resend verification email” if there’s a button for it
  5. Try a different email address if you have one

“It says my password is too weak”

Your password needs:

  • At least 8 characters
  • At least one capital letter (A, B, C, etc.)
  • At least one number (1, 2, 3, etc.)
  • Sometimes a special character (!, @, #, etc.)

Try: GardenTime2024! or BookLover99!

“I can’t remember which email I used”

Solution:

  • Check your most common email accounts
  • Look for a “Welcome to Claude” or “Welcome to ChatGPT” email
  • If you still can’t find it, create a new account with the email you want to use

“The page won’t load”

Try:

  1. Refresh the page (click the circular arrow, or press F5)
  2. Close your browser and open it again
  3. Check your internet connection
  4. Try a different browser
  5. Clear your browser’s cache (ask your instructor for help with this)

“I’m locked out of my account”

Usually this means:

  • You entered the wrong password too many times
  • Click “Forgot Password” to reset it
  • Or wait 15-30 minutes and try again

Part 8: Testing Your Setup

Let’s make sure everything is working! We’re going to send one simple test message to make sure your account works.

Send Your First Message to Claude

  1. Make sure you’re logged into Claude.ai
  2. Find the message box at the bottom of the screen
  3. Click inside the box so your cursor is blinking there
  4. Type exactly this:

Hello! This is my first message. Can you introduce yourself?

  1. Click the Send button (or press Enter on your keyboard)
  2. Wait a few seconds—Claude will respond!

What you should see: Claude will write back introducing itself, welcoming you, and probably asking how it can help you.

If this works, you’re all set! If it doesn’t work, raise your hand and your instructor will help you troubleshoot.

Send Your First Message to ChatGPT

Now let’s do the same with ChatGPT:

  1. Open a new tab in your browser (don’t close Claude)
  2. Go to chatgpt.com
  3. Log in if needed
  4. Type the same message:

Hello! This is my first message. Can you introduce yourself?

  1. Click Send
  2. ChatGPT will respond with an introduction

If both work, you’re ready for Lesson 3!

Part 9: Organizing Your Workspace

Here are some tips to make using AI easier:

Bookmark These Sites

What’s a bookmark? It’s a way to save a website so you can get back to it quickly without typing the address.

How to bookmark:

In most browsers:

  1. While on claude.ai or chatgpt.com
  2. Press Ctrl+D (Windows) or Command+D (Mac)
  3. Or click the star icon ⭐ in your address bar
  4. Click “Done” or “Save”

Now the site is saved! You can find it in your bookmarks menu.

Keep Your Passwords Handy (But Safe)

Recommended method:

  • Write your passwords in a small notebook
  • Keep it in a drawer at home (not with your computer)
  • Label it clearly so you remember what it is
  • Include the website name with each password

Example format:

Claude.ai
Email: mary.smith@gmail.com
Password: GardenTime2024!

ChatGPT.com
Email: mary.smith@gmail.com
Password: BookLover99!

Consider a Password Manager (Optional)

If you want to get fancy, password managers like LastPass or 1Password can remember all your passwords for you. But this is optional and not needed right away!

Your Assignment Before Lesson 3

Now it’s time to practice! Here’s your homework:

Assignment 1: Log In and Out

Practice logging in and out of both Claude and ChatGPT at least once. This helps you get comfortable with the process.

Assignment 2: Send Three Messages

Send at least three simple messages to either Claude or ChatGPT. They can be anything! For example:

  • “What’s the weather usually like in Paris in June?”
  • “Can you tell me a joke?”
  • “What’s a simple recipe for chocolate chip cookies?”

Don’t worry about asking “perfect” questions—just practice typing and sending messages.

Assignment 3: Explore the Interface

Spend 10 minutes just looking around. Click on different things. See what’s in the menus. You can’t break anything—this is your chance to explore!

Assignment 4: Write Down Questions

Write down 5 real questions you want to ask AI in our next lesson. Think about things you’re actually curious about or need help with.

Key Takeaways from Lesson 2

Let’s review what you learned today:

You successfully created accounts on Claude.ai and ChatGPT

You understand the basic interface—where to type and how to send messages

You know what information is safe to share and what to keep private

You understand the difference between free and paid versions

You know how to log in and log out

You sent your first messages to AI!

You learned basic troubleshooting for common problems

Questions and Discussion

Let’s take some time for questions. Common questions from students at this stage:

Q: “What if I forget my password?” A: Every login page has a “Forgot Password” link. Click it, and they’ll email you instructions to create a new one.

Q: “Can I use AI on my phone?” A: Yes! Just go to claude.ai or chatgpt.com in your phone’s web browser. Some AI services also have apps you can download.

Q: “Do I need to use both Claude and ChatGPT?” A: No, you can use just one if you prefer. Many people try both and then stick with their favorite.

Q: “How do I delete a conversation if I don’t want it saved?” A: In the conversation list (left sidebar), hover over the conversation and look for a trash can icon or three dots menu. Click it and select “Delete.”

Q: “Is there a limit to how many questions I can ask?” A: With free versions, there are some limits, but they’re generous. You’d have to send a LOT of messages in one day to hit the limit. For normal use, you won’t have any problems.

Q: “What if AI gives me information I think is wrong?” A: Good question! We’ll cover this more in Lesson 9, but for now: Always double-check important information, especially about health, money, or legal matters.

Looking Ahead to Lesson 3

In our next lesson, we’ll dive into actually using AI! We’ll:

  • Have real conversations with AI
  • Learn how to ask questions effectively
